IT Management Using a Heavyweight CIM Ontology
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper presents an approach for ontology-based IT management based on a heavyweight (formal) ontology using the Web Ontology Language (OWL). The ontology comprises a complete OWL representation of the Common Information Model (CIM) and management rules defined in the Semantic Web Rule Language (SWRL). The ontology not only models the managed system types, but a runtime system dynamically updates model instances in the ontology that reflect values of managed system entities. This allows the evalution of rules that take into account both model and model instances. A reaction module uses the CIM interface of the managed system to invoke CIM methods according to rule evaluation results, thus resulting in automated management. In order to ensure the consistency of the ontology when changes are performed, belief change theory is employed. 1998 ACM Subject Classification C.2.3 Network Operations

The process and problems associated with translating a specific software engineering ontology into a different ontology language are described. The software engineering ontology is the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) Common Information Model (CIM). The target ontology language is the W3C OWL DL language. The specific translations are described for various CIM constructs. Difficulties i...

An heavyweight ontology is a lightweight ontology (i.e. an ontology simply based on a hierarchy of concepts and a hierarchy of relations) enriched with axioms used to fix the semantic interpretation of concepts and relations. Such an ontology can be a domain ontology, an ontology of representation, an ontology of PSM, etc. In our work, we argue in favor of using a graph-based solution to deal w...
متن کاملToward a Formal Common Information Model Ontology
Self-managing systems will be highly dependent upon information acquired from disparate applications, devices, components and subsystems. To be effectively managed, such information will need to conform to a common model. One standard that provides a common model for describing disparate computer and network information is the Common Information Model (CIM). Although CIM defines the models nece...

CIM is the standard formalism for modeling management information developed by the Distributed Management Task Force (DMTF) in the context of its WBEM proposal, designed to provide a conceptual view of the managed environment. In this paper, we propose the inclusion of formal knowledge representation techniques, based on Description Logics (DLs) and the Web Ontology Language (OWL), in CIM-based...
